It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as "needle", "pull", "drill" or "hurt". The office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child. If your child is under the age of 3, we will perform what we call a "lap exam" (your child will be held gently by the dental assistant with the child's head resting on the doctors lap). This is a quick, painless visual exam and your child will be able to see you during the procedure. We find that the dental chair may be frightening to your child and he/she feels more secure while in this position. X-rays MAY be taken to detect any dental abnormalities at the doctor's request. Please keep in mind that this is a new experience for your child and crying is quite common. At the completion of the exam, your child will be rewarded with a balloon, prize and a new toothbrush. These things usually turn their frown into a smile. If your child is over the age of 3, we ask that you allow them to accompany our staff through the dental visit. We are all highly skilled in helping children overcome anxiety. Separation anxiety is not uncommon in children, so please try not to be concerned if your child exhibits some negative behavior. This is normal and will soon diminish. The doctors have observed that most children over the age of 3 react more positively when permitted to experience the dental appointment without the distraction of a family member. If at any time we feel a parent's presence may be helpful, we will ask the parent to come to the back. We strive to make each and every visit to our office a fun one! Your
child should visit the dentist by his/her 1st birthday. You can make the
first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. Your child should be
informed of the visit and told that the dentist and their staff will
explain all procedures and answer any questions. A simple explanation can
be, "the doctor will count your teeth" and "may take
special pictures of them".
